Abstract
Objective
This study aims to evaluate the level of knowledge regarding cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors among students at Fırat University, Kovancılar Vocational School and the factors affecting this knowledge level.
Material and Methods
The descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted online with 203 university students; data were collected using a demographic information form and the the cardiovascular disease risk factors knowledge level (CARRF-KL) scale.
Results
The participants’ mean total CARRF-KL score was 20.18±2.38, with a median value of 23. Women, older age groups, students studying in health-related fields, individuals with a personal or first-degree relative history of chronic disease, and those adopting healthy lifestyle behaviors (non-smokers/non-alcohol consumers, regular exercisers, low fast food consumers) had significantly higher knowledge scores (p<0.05).Although students were generally aware of common risk factors (smoking, stress, obesity, etc.), knowledge deficiencies were observed regarding technical topics such as cholesterol types, medication use, and nutrition. The findings indicate that knowledge did not translate into behavior; the majority of students continued unhealthy lifestyle habits.
Conclusion
In conclusion, increasing awareness of CVD risk factors among university students requires not only enhancing knowledge levels but also multi-faceted interventions that support the adoption of healthy lifestyle behaviors.
